This group of Cichlids have a feeding habit of picking up mouthfuls of sand to filter out any critters they can eat. If you are considering trying these make sure you have a suitable fine sand substrate. They not only filter it for food but it also plays a role in breeding where some species will prepare pits, craters or mounds to act as a breeding site.
